  • Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
  • Manchester City edged Brighton 4-3 in a shootout following a 2-2 draw.
  • City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved two penalties to send the holders through.

Liverpool and Manchester City both needed penalty shootouts on Wednesday night to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, beating Chelsea and Brighton respectively.

At Anfield, Liverpool won 6-5 on spot kicks after the match ended 1-1. Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot, and Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool three minutes later, also from a penalty.

Neither side found a winner in the second half, so the tie went to sudden death. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha's kick, but Ryan Gravenberch missed for the hosts, keeping Chelsea alive. Joe Gomez then scored for Liverpool, and Wesley Fofana blazed his effort over the bar to settle it.

Rulli the hero for City

At the Etihad Stadium, holders Manchester City came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Brighton before winning the shootout 4-3.

Malick Yalcouye put Brighton ahead in the 30th minute, and Mateo Kovacic levelled for City ten minutes later with a low strike from outside the box. Georginio Rutter restored Brighton's lead in the 47th minute from Jaouen Hadjam's cross, before Vitor Reis scored his first City goal in the 72nd minute, turning in Rayan Cherki's free-kick.

In the shootout, Kovacic had his kick saved by Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, but City's Geronimo Rulli stopped attempts from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. Cherki converted City's fifth kick to seal the win.

Complete Sports reported a record Etihad crowd of 55,345 for a domestic cup game.

In other fourth-round results, Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0, Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham, and Sunderland edged Brentford 3-2.
