Manchester United recovered from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford in the Champions League, a result that lifts some of the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Roma had the home fans stunned early. Matías Soulé put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, taking Rodrigo Mora's pass and finishing past Senne Lammens. Shortly after, Soulé's shot hit Ayden Heaven's hand and Donyell Malen scored from the spot to make it 2-0 inside 20 minutes.
Midway through the first half, United supporters threw tennis balls onto the pitch and chanted for the club's American owners, the Glazer family, to sell. Carrick had dropped Lisandro Martínez after his red card in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Chelsea, but the defence still looked shaky.
How the comeback happened
United's fightback started just before the hour. Matheus Cunha won a penalty after contact from Gianluca Mancini. Bruno Fernandes saw his first kick saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez, but encroachment gave him a second chance, and the United captain scored.
Bryan Mbeumo then hit both posts as United pushed for an equaliser. It came seven minutes from time when Cunha pounced on Leonardo Balerdi's poor clearance. Three minutes later the Brazilian scored again, beating Vásquez to put United in front.
Cunha was sent off in stoppage time after a second yellow card for a late challenge, so United had to hold on with 10 men. They did.
There was also concern for United's £70 million signing Carlos Baleba, who went off early in the second half with what looked like a hamstring injury.
The result ends a run of two Champions League defeats, to Atlético Madrid and Como, and gives Carrick room to breathe. Whether it turns United's season around is another matter.
For Roma, it is another painful night at a ground where they have now lost on all five visits. It follows last month's 4-3 defeat to Real Madrid, when Gian Piero Gasperini's side let a 3-1 lead slip with eight minutes left.
What happens next
United will wait on news of Baleba's injury after he was taken off with a suspected hamstring problem. Carrick's side will also have to cope without Cunha, who was sent off late on.
