- The Nigeria Democratic Congress will present its National Campaign Council for the 2027 elections on Monday in Abuja.
- The party will also publish its statement of account and hand certificates of return to its candidates.
- NDC says about 80 per cent of its candidates could not afford Expression of Interest forms and got them free.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will unveil its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections on Monday, 26 October, in Abuja. The party will also present its statement of account at its third National Executive Committee meeting that day.
The event is fixed for 10am at JD Event Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Way, opposite A-Class Park, Maitama. The party announced it in a notice signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
Certificates of return will also be handed to the party's candidates for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.
Party promises open books
According to the notice, the National Treasurer will present the statement of account, which the party says shows its commitment to transparency and accountability. The NDC challenged other parties, especially the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to do the same with their finances.
Director said the party's finances would have been stronger, but claimed about 80 per cent of its candidates could not afford the Expression of Interest forms. He blamed poverty and hardship in the country on the APC-led administration's economic policies, and said the party issued the forms free to those candidates.
The party said the campaign council will cover all its candidates, from the presidency down to the state assemblies, and will help firm up its campaign structures before the elections.
Monday's unveiling comes after the inauguration was moved from 20 October. The party had said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had a tight schedule and an important commitment abroad.
The NDC's National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, has dismissed claims that the party is inactive or divided. He said its leadership remains committed to the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket, and that the National Working Committee has met several times since August and submitted proposals on the campaign council's make-up.
What happens next
The NEC meeting is expected to take key decisions on the party's preparations for 2027. Nigerians will be watching to see the full campaign team and the account details the party has promised to make public.
