The gist
  • President Bola Tinubu launched his 2027 re-election campaign at a rally in Kaduna on Saturday.
  • He told supporters his political opponents caused Nigeria's hunger and poverty and that his government is fixing it.
  • Tinubu also praised APC governors for paying salaries and urged voters to collect their PVCs.

President Bola Tinubu formally opened his 2027 re-election campaign on Saturday at a rally in Kaduna, telling supporters that the hunger and poverty Nigerians complain about were caused by his political opponents.

The event held at the Kaduna Township Stadium, also called Ranchers Bees Stadium, and drew party leaders and supporters from across the country. It marked the official start of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign.

Addressing the crowd, the President said his rivals keep raising hunger and poverty without acknowledging what his government is doing about them. He said his administration is working to remove both problems, and that those now complaining were the ones who created them.

Tinubu also defended his record on workers' pay, saying salaries go out on time, and praised APC governors for developing their states. He described them as hardworking and said he was proud of them.

Subsidy, PVCs and a January date

The President told supporters that the removal of the fuel subsidy belongs to the past, and that his government had ended what he called corruption, falsified invoices and smuggling of wealth. He promised prosperity, continuity and progress if given another term.

He asked the crowd whether they had their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and urged them to come out in force on January 16, 2027 to vote for him and for APC candidates for governor, Senate, House of Representatives and state assemblies.

Tinubu thanked Kaduna residents for the votes that helped him win in the last election and asked them to renew his mandate. He also addressed young Nigerians, promising them a better future.

He dismissed the opposition as angry and said they had nothing to offer beyond criticism.

What happens next

The Kaduna flag-off starts the APC's nationwide push for the 2027 general election, with the party seeking to keep the presidency and build on its support across the states. Nigerians will decide at the polls in January 2027.
