Omoni Oboli to release seven Christmas movies in MTN partnership
- Omoni Oboli has partnered with MTN Nigeria to release seven Christmas movies this festive season.
- The films will drop on her YouTube channel, Omoni Oboli TV, starting the second week of November.
- She said the MTN deal made the seven-film run possible and the colour of Christmas this year is yellow.
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli is teaming up with MTN Nigeria to release seven Christmas movies this festive season, she announced on her Instagram page on Wednesday.
The films will go out on her YouTube channel, Omoni Oboli TV, with releases starting in the second week of November. She told the Independent that the first movie drops next Friday.
Oboli, who calls her fans "besties", said the telecoms partnership is what made the seven-film run possible. "The fact that we can do seven this year, this is the highest we've ever done and it is because MTN is on board," she said.
She also said the deal did not start with this project, pointing to an earlier partnership on Love In Every Word 2.
Why seven movies, and what fans will see
Asked why seven, Oboli said she simply wanted to do more and pull people into the Christmas spirit. She described herself as a "Christmas movie girly" who watches a festive film every night during the season.
She said the movies will carry themes of love, family, togetherness, connection and forgiveness. One of the seven is a sequel to an earlier Christmas film of hers.
She is keeping the titles under wraps until release day. She said this is deliberate, because some YouTube channels copy titles to divert viewers looking for her films.
On the Nigerian setting, she said fans will see Christmas trees, family gatherings and relatives travelling to spend time together, rather than the snow of foreign films. "The color of Christmas this year is yellow," she said.
She also said the project has been in the works for four or five months, with scriptwriters developing stories. She said her channel is a way to spotlight upcoming stars and keep her team earning through the year, not only when she has a cinema or streaming release.
Her post drew congratulations from colleagues, including Ufuoma McDermott, Shaffy Bello and Chinenye Nnebe.
What happens next
The first of the seven films is expected next Friday, with the rest rolling out across the Christmas period. Oboli said she is also open to seasonal films for other holidays in future, and that a cinema release is planned for next year.
