Oshoala gives former grassroots coach a new Toyota Highlander

  • Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has bought her first coach, Emmanuel Osahon Orobosa of FC Robo, a new Toyota Highlander.
  • FC Robo announced the gift in a statement, saying it shows she has not forgotten those who helped her rise.
  • The coach has guided her since 2009, and she had earlier donated a bus to the Lagos club.

Asisat Oshoala has bought a brand-new Toyota Highlander for the coach who first shaped her game, Emmanuel Osahon Orobosa of FC Robo International in Lagos.

The club made the gift public in a statement on Thursday, describing it as a thank-you to a man who has been part of the Super Falcons forward's story since she was a teenager.

Orobosa founded FC Robo and serves as its chairman and head coach. According to the club, he has guided Oshoala since 2009, when her talent first began to stand out.

Why it matters

For many Nigerian players, the road to professional football starts with a local coach who asks for nothing in return. Oshoala's gift is a public nod to that unpaid work, and the club said it carries meaning beyond the price of the vehicle.

FC Robo said the gesture shows she has kept faith with the people who helped her before she became one of Africa's most decorated female footballers.

"Your presentation of a Toyota Highlander to Coach Osahon is a beautiful demonstration of gratitude," the club said in its statement.

It is not her first gift to the club. FC Robo recalled that she donated a bus in her early years in Europe, and said the new car reinforces her ties to the place where her career began.

Oshoala's path to the top was not smooth. Growing up in Lagos, she faced resistance at home, where her parents wanted her to focus on school rather than football. She has said her grandmother backed her when the family did not.

Orobosa is said to have visited her family to make the case for her to keep playing. She joined FC Robo in 2009 at 15, then moved to Rivers Angels in 2013.

From there she went to Liverpool in 2015, then Arsenal, Dalian Quanjian in China and Barcelona, where she won the UEFA Women's Champions League and several domestic titles. She later played for Bay FC in the United States and joined Saudi side Al-Hilal in September 2025.

She has won the CAF African Women's Player of the Year award six times, a record, and was the first African woman to score at three different FIFA Women's World Cups.

The club's statement did not say what the vehicle cost.
