  • Party representatives met at OYSIEC's Ibadan headquarters on Friday to check their logos on ballot paper samples.
  • One party spotted a wrong logo and OYSIEC noted the correction, the inter-party council chairman said.
  • Oyo's local government election is set for December 29, 2026.

Political parties taking part in Oyo State's local government election have been shown sample ballot papers so they can confirm their logos are printed correctly before the December 29, 2026 vote.

Party representatives gathered at the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) headquarters in Ibadan on Friday for the check, according to a statement from the commission's chairman, Dr Afees Adeniyi.

The exercise was led by OYSIEC commissioner Chief Olukunmi Agboola on the chairman's behalf. The commission said it gave the parties a chance to spot and fix any mistakes in how their symbols appeared.

After going through the samples, the representatives approved them, the statement said.

Why it matters to voters

For an ordinary voter, the logo is often the easiest way to find a party on the ballot, especially where many parties are contesting. A wrong symbol can send a vote to the wrong party or spoil it altogether, so checking early is meant to prevent confusion at the polling unit.

Mr Opeyemi Akinade, who chairs the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Oyo State and also leads the National Rescue Movement, praised OYSIEC for bringing parties in on the process.

He said he saw one party's representative raise a wrong logo, present the correct one, and OYSIEC officials record the correction.

"I am pleased with this initiative. OYSIEC has done well by inviting party chairmen to examine and confirm that their respective party logos are correctly displayed," he said.

Akinade said his party was "98 per cent ready" for the election, and that the parties were preparing well for what he described as the third local government poll under the current administration in the state.

The council election is scheduled for December 29, 2026.

What happens next

With the samples approved, OYSIEC is expected to move on to printing the actual ballot papers for the vote. Parties will then shift their focus to campaigns and to getting their agents ready for election day.
