PSG vs Lyon Ligue 1 match moved from Sunday to Monday over Paris protests
- French league moved PSG's home game against Lyon to Monday after police banned Sunday's fixture.
- Paris braces for another weekend of protests after riots and looting on October 17.
- Toulouse vs Troyes was also shifted, and Marseille and Lille said their club stores were looted.
Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 home match against Lyon has been pushed from Sunday to Monday after Paris police said the game could not go ahead as planned, the French league announced.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), which runs France's top two divisions, said it had received a police order barring the fixture at the Parc des Princes on Sunday at 8:45pm. The match will now be played on Monday at 8:30pm.
The decision comes as French authorities prepare for another weekend of demonstrations in Paris and other cities, a week after rioting and looting broke out on the sidelines of protests.
Why the game matters beyond football
The protests began over the cost of living and what demonstrators describe as declining public services, and they have now begun to reshape France's sporting calendar.
According to the LFP, this is the fourth match moved this weekend across Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 because of the planned demonstrations. Toulouse's home game against Troyes was shifted from Saturday to Sunday at the request of local authorities.
Marseille and Lille both said their official club stores were looted during last weekend's unrest.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Tuesday that authorities would mount a "massive" security operation for Saturday's protests, with troops reinforcing police.
Sunday's security load is heavier still: the NFL is due to play its first regular-season game in Paris, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints, at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis — about 10 kilometres from Place de la Bastille, where protests are expected to start.
US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday he was concerned about the NFL game. "I would have said the NFL could have probably postponed that match if you want to know, because France is really in trouble," he said.
Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said earlier on Friday that he believed the NFL would have cancelled the game if the situation were unsafe.
What happens next
The rearranged PSG-Lyon game now falls on the same night as the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. Injured PSG pair Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among the contenders for the award.
On the pitch, the fixture pits two of Ligue 1's early pacesetters against each other. Lyon lead the table on 14 points after seven matches, with reigning French and European champions PSG second on goal difference.
