The gist
  • First Lady Remi Tinubu spoke at the launch of a grassroots group backing President Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid.
  • She said she hopes to leave the Presidential Villa in 2031 and enjoy a Nigeria she can travel in easily.
  • She pointed to changes at the country's airports and joked that sceptics may need 'Bola Tinubu eyeglasses'.

The First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has said she looks forward to leaving the Presidential Villa in 2031 and stepping into a Nigeria she can enjoy as a woman in her seventies.

She spoke at the inauguration of the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots group mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election in 2027.

According to her, she wants a country where travel is quick and easy, and she held up the country's airports as one sign that things are changing. She said she wants to get to the airport and travel quickly, and that the airports are changing.

She also had a word for Nigerians who say they cannot see progress under her husband's administration. Such people, she suggested, might need what she called "Bola Tinubu eyeglasses", adding the JigiBola reference.

Backing for 2027

After her remarks, the First Lady formally commissioned the movement's Abuja office and declared her support for the President's second-term bid.

She said she was commissioning the headquarters to the glory of God and for the President's victory in 2027.

Reports of the event also said she closed with words of support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and for the movement's convener, Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo.

Her comments come as the 2027 election cycle gathers pace, with groups loyal to the President already setting up campaign structures. For ordinary Nigerians, the debate is less about the Villa and more about what they feel in daily life: fuel queues, food prices, transport costs and the state of public services.

The First Lady's remarks suggest the government will campaign on visible infrastructure, including airport upgrades, as evidence that its reforms are paying off.

What happens next

The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement is expected to begin grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet released the full timetable for the polls.
