Rudeboy says going solo after P-Square was less stressful than the group

The gist
  • Paul Okoye, known as Rudeboy, said moving from P-Square to a solo career was easier than staying in the group.
  • He told Lun Lifestyle TV he was P-Square's songwriter, producer and singer, so little changed for him.
  • He said solo work gives him more creative control, with a team that does not question his decisions.

Paul Okoye, the singer Nigerians know as Rudeboy, says life as a solo artist has been less stressful for him than his years in P-Square.

He said this in an interview with Lun Lifestyle TV, according to reports by Daily Post, PM News and Naija News. In the interview, he explained that the switch after the group split did not weigh on him heavily.

His reason: he claims he was already doing most of the work inside the group. “I am the producer, writer, and singer,” he said, adding that he was the one “doing everything in the group, with due respect.”

Because of that, he said, moving as a group or alone felt like the same job. He described solo work as easier, saying that although he now works with a team, “nobody is going to question me.”

“I have more creative control. It is easy for me.”

Why it matters to fans

P-Square, made up of Paul and his twin brother Peter Okoye, was one of Nigeria's biggest music acts. The group broke up twice, first in 2017 after tensions that started in 2016, and again in 2024 after a 2021 reunion, according to the reports.

For fans who still hope for another reunion, Rudeboy's comments suggest he is settled in his solo career and values the freedom it gives him. His claim about his role in the group is his own account; Peter has not responded to it in these reports.

Rudeboy also spoke about social media, saying it has made musicians too accessible to fans and reduced the mystery and admiration artistes once enjoyed. He said the platforms have brought benefits to the music industry, but also cost artistes some of their prestige.

What happens next

There is no word of a new P-Square project from either brother in these reports. For now, Rudeboy appears focused on his solo run, with the creative control he says comes with it.
