UK keeps two-year work visa for some graduates, cuts others to 18 months from 2027

The gist
  • The UK will keep its two-year Graduate visa for graduates of universities with strong compliance and job outcomes.
  • Other international graduates, including many Nigerians, will get 18 months from January 1, 2027.
  • Nigeria was the UK's third-largest source of sponsored students in the year to June 2026.

The United Kingdom has partly reversed its plan to shorten the post-study work visa for international graduates, but most will still see their stay cut from January 2027.

Under the revised policy announced in the UK's 2026 Budget, graduates of universities with strong immigration compliance records and good employment outcomes will keep the two-year Graduate visa. Other international graduates will get 18 months.

The change takes effect on January 1, 2027. Doctoral graduates are not affected and keep their three-year entitlement.

The government has not yet published the list of qualifying universities or explained how institutions will be assessed. That leaves current and prospective students unsure which schools keep the longer route.

Why this matters for Nigerians

Nigeria was the UK's third-largest source of sponsored international students in the year ending June 2026, with 26,060 sponsored study visas issued to Nigerian main applicants, behind China and India.

Nigerians also received 20,604 approvals under the Graduate route in the same period, the third-largest nationality group on the scheme.

Many Nigerian students depend on the Graduate visa to work after their studies, gain experience and earn back what their education cost. The visa lets them work or look for work without an employer sponsoring them straight away.

The visa cannot be extended. Graduates who want to stay longer must switch to another route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, which usually requires an employer sponsor.

Students who finish their studies and apply for the Graduate visa before the end of 2026 will still get the full two years. The 18-month limit applies only to applications from January 1, 2027.

What happens next

The UK government has not said when it will publish the list of universities that qualify for the two-year route. Until then, students planning to study in Britain from 2027 will have to wait to know how long they can stay after graduating.
