Yul Edochie says polygamy is not a sin, Lizzy Gold pushes back

The gist
  • Yul Edochie said on social media that having more than one wife is not a sin and has biblical support.
  • He made the posts after sharing a clip of a US pastor who introduced a second wife in church.
  • Actress Lizzy Gold responded publicly, calling polygamy a big sin.

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has restated his support for polygamy, telling his followers that marrying more than one wife is not a sin and that the Bible backs it up.

His posts, shared on X and Facebook this week, drew sharp reactions online, including from fellow actress Lizzy Gold, who publicly disagreed with him.

Edochie has defended polygamy since 2022, when he publicly took actress Judy Austin as a second wife.

What he said

In his posts, Edochie argued that several great men in the Bible had many wives and God did not condemn them. He said God was in some cases willing to give them more.

He also claimed that some men are meant to have more than one wife but stop at one because they do not understand themselves or fear what society will say. According to him, some of these men later struggle in life.

"Polygamy is not a sin," he wrote in one post. In another, he said he totally agreed that it is "the will of God".

His comments followed a video he shared on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, of Israel Ford, pastor of LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio. According to reports, Ford had stood beside his first wife, Prophetess Lydia Ford, during a live service two days earlier to introduce Shakayla Ford as his second wife. Ford argued that treating monogamy as the only biblically valid form of marriage has no foundation in scripture.

The pushback

Lizzy Gold was among those who responded. In a comment shared through a popular social media blog, the actress wrote: "Polygamy is a big sin, Yul Edochie… zukwanike."

Gold has in the past denied rumours linking her romantically to Edochie, describing him as a close friend and a mentor who helped her find her feet in the industry.

Other critics also pushed back on his posts, while some supporters backed his position. The debate over polygamy is an old one in Nigeria, where many families are polygamous even as churches and society generally hold up one wife as the ideal.

Edochie's personal life has stayed in the public eye since he took a second wife, and his views on marriage regularly draw attention online.
