Kwankwaso joins TikTok, urges Nigerians to follow for daily updates

The gist
  • Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NDC's 2027 vice-presidential candidate, has opened a TikTok account.
  • He announced it on X on Wednesday, promising authentic information and content about his daily life.
  • The move comes as the NDC inaugurates its campaign council ahead of the 2027 election.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has joined TikTok. He announced the move in a post on his X account on Wednesday, asking Nigerians to follow him on the video-sharing platform.

In the post, the former Kano State governor said followers would get "authentic information, the latest updates, and exclusive contents directly related to my daily life." He ended the message with a short note of hope: "Nigeria will be OK. — RMK.”

In a video attached to the post, he welcomed users to the account and asked them to turn on notifications and share his videos. "Hello TikTokers, welcome to our TikTok account," he said, thanking them and asking for God's blessing.

The account gives Kwankwaso another way to speak directly to supporters, especially younger Nigerians who spend time on short-video apps. It also puts him on the same platform where his running mate, Peter Obi, has held livestreams with supporters.

Why it matters for 2027

Kwankwaso is on the NDC ticket with Obi, the party's presidential candidate, for the 2027 general election. The two men joined the NDC in May after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi was ratified as the party's flagbearer at its national convention on May 30, and Kwankwaso was named his running mate.

The pairing brings together Obi's following and Kwankwaso's Kwankwasiyya movement, which is strong in Kano and other parts of the North. Both men are seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports, the NDC inaugurated its National Campaign Council on the same day Kwankwaso announced his TikTok account. The party's National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, chairs the council, with Obi as co-chairman and Kwankwaso as co-vice-chairman. Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim was named Director-General.

The council is expected to coordinate the party's nationwide campaign and mobilisation.

Online popularity does not always turn into votes, and how much TikTok reach will help the NDC at the ballot is still an open question. But for now, the party is clearly pushing to reach voters where they already are.

What happens next

The NDC campaign council is expected to begin nationwide mobilisation ahead of the 2027 vote. Nigerians should expect more direct posts and videos from the party's candidates as the election draws closer.
