Actors guild partners Bebuzee to give members a new way to earn online

The gist
  • The Actors Guild of Nigeria is working with US tech firm Bebuzee on a digital community for actors.
  • Guild president Abubakar Yakubu says members will earn from content they post on the platform.
  • The AGN community is set to open on October 31, with members promised VIP status.

Nigerian actors may soon have another place to earn from their craft online. The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has struck a partnership with Bebuzee, a US-based technology company, to build a digital community where members can make money from what they post.

The guild's national president, Abubakar Yakubu, announced the plan on Thursday, shortly after Bebuzee named him its newest brand ambassador. The company describes its product as an AI-powered super app that launched in Nigeria recently.

The AGN community on the platform is scheduled to open on October 31. According to Bebuzee, guild members who join will get VIP status, and those who bring their content, fans and creative businesses onto the app will be paid immediately for what they publish.

Why it matters for actors

Many Nigerian actors rely on artiste fees and whatever they make from existing social media platforms. Yakubu said the new arrangement is meant to widen that income base, noting that actors already earn from YouTube and other sites and that this adds one more source.

"The more they earn, the better it gets for them," Yakubu said.

For everyday film fans, the move could mean more Nollywood content showing up on a new app rather than the platforms they already use. For actors, it is a bet that a dedicated space, with payments attached, can turn their online following into steadier cash.

Yakubu is not the first Nollywood figure to sign with Bebuzee. Seven others were unveiled when the platform launched in Lagos: Patience Ozokwo, Ebele Okaro, Zubby Michael, Destiny Etiko, Segun Arinze, Sani Danja and Jide Kosoko.

What happens next

The test comes on October 31, when the AGN community goes live. How many guild members join, and whether the promised instant payments arrive as described, will shape whether the partnership delivers the extra income the guild is promising.
