Dorathy Bachor reacts to engagement rumours with Broda Shaggi: 'Leave me alone'

The gist
  • Dorathy Bachor has reacted to rumours that she is engaged to comedian Broda Shaggi.
  • The rumours followed a video of the pair in bed, with Bachor showing what looked like an engagement ring.
  • She said on social media that people love to poke her and asked to be left alone.

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Dorathy Bachor has spoken out after a video of her and comedian Broda Shaggi set off rumours that the two are engaged.

The clip, which spread online, showed Bachor lying beside Broda Shaggi on a bed and holding up what appeared to be an engagement ring to the camera. In the same video, the comedian thanked her for standing by him through a hard time, according to Naija News.

Neither the video nor Bachor's response confirmed that any engagement took place. The ring was never explained.

What Bachor said

In a post on her social media page on Saturday, Bachor made clear she was not enjoying the attention. She said she prefers to keep her private life out of public discussion.

“For someone who minds her business, you people really love to poke me. Leave me alone,” she wrote.

She accused internet users of deliberately provoking her with comments and assumptions, and asked them to respect her privacy.

The speculation did not come from nowhere. Months earlier, Broda Shaggi had posted a loved-up video with Bachor in which he spoke warmly about her, saying he felt something special the first day he saw her and that he had found his “missing ribs.” He later thanked her for standing by him after he survived a gunshot incident, and promised to always love her.

Why it matters

For many Nigerians, celebrity relationships are everyday entertainment, and a ring on camera is enough to start a thousand posts. But Bachor's reaction is a reminder that the people in those videos are private citizens too, and that a clip shared for laughs can turn into pressure they did not ask for.

Some fans backed her online. One commenter, @IFEOLUWAAHH, wrote that minding her business was her choice, while another, @ONLY_IN_BBA, urged her not to answer anyone and said everyone deserves to be happy.

What happens next: Neither Bachor nor Broda Shaggi has said anything more about the ring since her post. Unless one of them addresses it directly, the rumours are likely to keep circulating on social media.
