Toluwanisings: gospel singer died after hospitals turned him away, reports say
- Gospel singer Toluwanisings died on October 14, 2026, after collapsing at his Ibadan home, according to reports.
- Reports say he was taken to several Ibadan hospitals, including UCH, but was rejected or delayed.
- His family is now divided over where he should be buried, drawing comparisons to Mohbad's death.
Gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, known on stage as Toluwanisings, died on October 14, 2026, after collapsing on the staircase of his home in Ibadan, Oyo State. He was 34.
According to reports, he had just returned from a worship concert titled In His Presence when he slumped.
Tribune reported that as he struggled for breath, he was rushed to about seven or eight hospitals across Ibadan, including the University College Hospital (UCH). The report said each hospital either rejected him or gave one administrative excuse after another, and he died without getting treatment.
That account has not been independently confirmed by Naija Breaking. But it has stirred fresh anger online about how Nigerian hospitals handle emergencies, and about the long-standing complaint that some hospitals refuse emergency patients without a police report.
A family dispute over burial
The conversation online soon moved from the health system to the singer's private life. Tribune reported that for weeks, public attempts were made to paint him as an ungrateful child who abandoned his father, lavished his fortune on his wife's family and lived a hypocritical life. Those claims have not been tested in any court.
The family is also divided over where he should be buried. His widow is said to want a quiet burial in a modern cemetery. His father and other relatives reportedly want him buried inside his newly completed Ibadan house or beside his late mother's grave in Ikirun, warning that Irẹlẹ, a deity revered in Ikirun, would otherwise strike.
Toluwanisings is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
The case has drawn comparisons to that of singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, who died in September 2023 at 27. His death also set off disputes over paternity, a coroner's inquest and family quarrels over his estate, and his body remained in a morgue for years.
What happens next
There has been no public statement from Oyo State health authorities or from UCH on the hospitals named in the report. It is also not clear when the burial will hold, given the family disagreement.
For many Nigerians, the case is a reminder of a fear they know well: that in an emergency, the nearest hospital may turn you away.
