Katsina United fight back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Plateau United

1 min read
The gist
  • Katsina United scored twice in the last 10 minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw at home against Plateau United.
  • Plateau led through an own goal on 30 minutes and doubled the lead late in the second half.
  • Yusha'u Armiya'u pulled one back before Umar Rabiu equalised deep into stoppage time.

Katsina United came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Plateau United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 10 game at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts trailed at half-time after an own goal put Plateau United ahead on the half hour mark. The visitors then looked to have sealed the win when they scored again late in the second half.

But Katsina United hit back twice in the closing minutes to take a point in front of their home fans.

How the comeback happened

Plateau United's opener came off a Katsina United player, with the sources naming Umar Rabiu as the man who turned the ball into his own net on 30 minutes.

The visitors doubled their lead through Jibril Ibrahim. The outlets differ on the timing: Leadership put the second goal in the 80th minute, while Daily Post reported it came in the 82nd.

Either way, Katsina United responded quickly. Yusha'u Armiya'u pulled one back with about six minutes of normal time left, reviving hopes of a comeback.

The hosts kept pushing and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Rabiu scored at the right end to make it 2-2, atoning for his earlier own goal. Leadership timed the equaliser in the 93rd minute.

The final whistle followed soon after, leaving Plateau United to rue two dropped points from a game they had led by two goals late on.

What it means

Both sides take a point from the North-West versus North-Central meeting as the NPFL season gathers pace.

For Katsina United, the fightback will lift the dressing room, though conceding twice at home will worry the coaches. Plateau United, meanwhile, will be asking how they let a two-goal lead slip so late.
