Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League's London derby, with a goalkeeping error and a late strike settling a match that stayed goalless for more than an hour.
The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, trying to deal with a Tottenham corner, punched the ball into his own net.
Chelsea's afternoon got worse three minutes later. Midfielder Cole Palmer was shown a second yellow card and sent off in the 80th minute, leaving the hosts with 10 men.
Tottenham used the extra man. Mathys Tel made it 2-0 in the 88th minute with a long-range finish after a strong individual run.
De Zerbi: the wingers won it
Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi told the BBC his side deserved the result. "I think we deserved to win. The players worked very well and prepared very well for the game," he said, adding that the quality of his players was clear.
In his post-match interview, De Zerbi singled out his wide men. "Mathys Tel had a great game. I think the two wingers won the game," he said, naming Tel and Mohammed Kudus as the players who "made the difference".
According to Daily Post, the win lifts Tottenham to 12th on the table with 9 points from eight matches. Before kickoff, Legit.ng had reported Spurs in 17th, seven points behind Chelsea, who were fourth after wins over Bournemouth and Everton.
For Chelsea, the defeat is a dent to a strong start under Xabi Alonso and leaves questions about a defence that had been protecting a good run. Legit.ng had also reported that Emiliano Martinez would miss the derby with a broken jaw, with Alonso saying surgery went well and the player would be out for a few weeks.
