The Lagos chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has moved closer to electing a new executive after a seven-member electoral committee was inaugurated at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere on Friday.
The committee, known as SWANECO, was set up at an extraordinary congress of the chapter. It will be chaired by Mozez Praiz, with McAnthony Anaelechukwu as secretary. The other members are Dr Abdul Rahmone Abulore, Soliu Adeyemo, Tega Onajaife, Jovita Ekeh and Dr Suo Chapele.
Patrick Omorodion, who heads the caretaker committee running the chapter, said the national body asked his team to strengthen the chapter's administration and prepare the ground for a credible election.
Speaking for the new committee, Praiz promised to handle the job properly and deliver an executive that would bring back the chapter's old energy, including activities such as the SWAN Cup, which has been on hold.
Why it matters
SWAN is the body that represents sports journalists across the country, and its Lagos chapter is one of the largest. A properly elected executive means members have a recognised leadership to speak for them in dealings with sports bodies, government agencies and media organisations.
The caretaker committee was set up by national SWAN on 9 October 2026, with Omorodion as chairman, Oni Afolabi as secretary and Anulika Menanya as a member.
Enitan Obadina, the national welfare officer, represented the national executive at the congress. He said national SWAN, led by president Isaiah Benjamin, is backing a process that follows the association's constitution and carries members along, so that problems of the past are avoided.
Several veterans of the association attended the ceremony, including Dr Mitchel Obi, Kunle Solaja, Felix Awogu, Godwin Enakhena, Emma Jemegah, Joe Apu, Pius Ayinor, Mike Mayaki and Smart Ebhodaghe.
What happens next
The committee is expected to draw up the timetable for the chapter's elections and set out how members will take part. No date for the vote has been announced.
