Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the recruitment of 75 technical staff for the Zamfara State Internal Revenue Service (ZIRS), the service has announced.
The move is part of the state government's push to strengthen how much revenue Zamfara collects. The service said the exercise followed approved workforce requirements and public service procedures.
The new staff will work across several areas, including tax administration, legal services, public enlightenment, information, photography and information and communication technology.
How the candidates were picked
According to the service, 484 candidates sat a written examination on 11 July 2026. The scripts were marked independently by the recruitment committee.
Candidates were also assessed on their academic and professional credentials, communication skills, technical competence, presentation, attitude and general knowledge.
After collating and verifying results, 75 candidates passed and were selected for appointment.
The service said the process was based on merit and competence, that advertised requirements were followed, and that credentials were checked, with fairness and transparency throughout.
Why it matters
Internally generated revenue is a big issue for states. Many rely heavily on federal allocations, and weak tax collection means less money for roads, schools, health centres and salaries.
A larger, better-skilled revenue team could widen Zamfara's tax net and bring in more funds. But residents will be watching to see whether the extra staff translate into better services, and whether taxpayers are treated fairly.
The service did not say when the new staff will resume or how much the recruitment will cost.
