Prestmit gift card trading: what sellers should know about rates, payouts

By Naija Breaking Newsroom2 min read
The gist
  • Prestmit says it has more than 1 million users and 2.5 million app downloads, and trades over 10,000 gift cards.
  • Rates are published before trading and payouts are said to land within five minutes of verification.
  • Sellers can be paid in naira, cedis, dollars or crypto, but the sources are reviews, not independent tests.

Prestmit, a Nigerian gift card trading platform, says it has passed one million users and 2.5 million app downloads, and trades more than 10,000 gift cards. The figures come from reviews published by Nairametrics and Punch, which describe how the platform works for people selling cards.

For anyone holding an unused gift card, the practical questions are simple: what is the card worth, and will the money actually arrive? Both reviews say Prestmit answers the first by publishing rates for every brand it trades, so a seller can check the price before submitting a card or opening an account.

Rates differ by the card's issuer country and denomination, according to Punch. A US card and a UK card with the same face value are not worth the same amount.

How verification and payout work

Physical cards are checked from photos the seller uploads, so the card number, text and scratch panel must be clear. Electronic codes are checked from the code itself. In both cases the details are tested against the issuer's database to confirm the balance before the seller is credited.

Payout is said to land within five minutes of a card clearing verification, though the platform notes it can take longer when volumes are high.

Sellers choose where the money goes: a naira wallet that can be withdrawn to a bank account, a cedis wallet for sellers in Ghana, or a US dollar wallet. Crypto payouts are available in Bitcoin, USDT, Litecoin or Dogecoin, sent to the wallet address entered at the time of trade. Punch notes that the crypto address cannot be changed afterwards, so sellers should check it carefully.

The same account also handles crypto-to-cash trades, airtime, data and eSIM purchases, electricity and cable TV bills, and betting wallet funding. Large crypto trades go through a Prestmit over-the-counter desk, which Punch says prices trades from $3,000. Businesses can add gift card trading to their own products through an API, setting their own prices and keeping the margin.

What happens next

Punch's review concludes that Prestmit is a safe place to sell gift cards, citing rates published before trading, verification before payment and quick support. That is the outlet's assessment rather than an independent audit, and the sources did not publish complaint figures or regulatory findings.

Sellers who want to compare should check the published rate for their specific card first, then confirm the payout route and wallet details before submitting. The app is available on Google Play and the App Store.
