Prudent Gabriel says she offered to delay wedding for elder sister's sake
- Fashion designer Prudent Gabriel says she called her elder sister before her wedding date was fixed to check she was comfortable.
- She offered to move the wedding to the following year, saying neither she nor her husband was in a hurry.
- Her sister told her to go ahead, and she says she hugged her on the wedding day and promised it would be her turn next year.
Fashion designer Prudent Gabriel has said she rang her elder sister before her wedding date was set because she felt uneasy about marrying first.
She spoke on Sunday, 18 October 2026 at the Singles Connect and Prayer Conference of Next Level Prayers in Lagos, hosted by Pastor Bolaji Idowu at Harvesters Globe.
According to her account, she asked her sister directly whether she was fine with the younger sibling walking down the aisle first. She said she wanted to be sure the news would not leave her sister feeling pressured or hurt.
Her sister, she said, told her to go ahead and described the marriage as something that would turn out to be a blessing to her too.
An offer to wait a year
Okopi said she did not stop at that question. She told her sister the wedding could be pushed to the following year, since neither she nor her husband was in a rush.
She also asked whether her sister's partner was ready for marriage, noting that her sister takes her time with relationships and can be choosy.
In her words, her sister understood that she and her husband were ready to move forward, while her sister's partner was not yet prepared. That, she suggested, made the situation easier for her sister to accept.
She recalled hugging her sister at the wedding and telling her the following year would be her turn.
Even so, she admitted she still felt some guilt about the order of events, and said her sister's calm response made the whole thing lighter for her.
Okopi is married to gospel singer Okopi Peterson. The couple's traditional wedding, with its dance and outfit displays, was widely shared online.
Why it resonates
In many Nigerian families, there is an unwritten expectation that older daughters marry before their younger ones. A younger sister's wedding can stir quiet tension, gossip among relatives and pressure on the unmarried sibling.
Okopi's account has started a conversation about how families handle that expectation, and about the small, considerate steps siblings can take to protect each other's feelings.
