Social media critic Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan or VDM, has said his friendship with Davido broke down over the fight for justice for the late singer Mohbad.
VDM spoke in a video posted on Thursday, November 5, according to reports by Legit.ng, PM News and Leadership. The three outlets gave the same account of what he said.
He said the same cause that brought them together later pulled them apart.
How the friendship started and soured
Mohbad died in September 2023, and his death sparked public outrage and questions about the circumstances surrounding it. VDM said he became deeply involved in the demand for answers.
According to him, Davido followed him on social media in early 2024. He said he was starstruck at first because of the singer's fame, and the two later became friends. VDM said he sometimes promoted Davido's songs and new releases.
He said things changed after he was arrested in 2024 and later found a WhatsApp group chat in 2025.
VDM alleged that the chat involved people associated with Davido and other figures in the entertainment industry. He claimed the conversations suggested some members had planned his arrest because of his continued questions about Mohbad's death.
He said he tried several times to reach Davido to ask why people in his circle would allegedly be involved in such a plan. According to VDM, the singer did not answer his calls.
He also said a blog linked to the singer's associates later suggested that he wanted to record a conversation with Davido for blackmail.
VDM described the turn of events as a betrayal, saying it hurt because he had genuinely considered Davido a friend.
The allegations are VDM's account and have not been proven in court.

The rift comes amid an ongoing back-and-forth between VDM and rapper Zlatan. Davido was drawn into that row after a video surfaced of him dancing to Zlatan's song 'INFERNO' at a wedding welcome party in Morocco. The song contains lyrics directed at VDM.
