FCCPC receives awards from Daily Independent, NaijaTimes and Babangida foundation

  • Four Nigerian media and civil society groups have honoured the FCCPC for its consumer protection work in 2026.
  • NaijaTimes presented its Institutional Integrity and Public Service Award to FCCPC chief Tunji Bello in Abuja.
  • Daily Independent, BrandXchange and the Aisha Ibrahim Babangida Foundation also named the commission for honours.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has picked up a set of honours from Nigerian media houses and civil society groups, all praising its work on consumer protection and fair markets in 2026.

The awards came from Daily Independent, NaijaTimes, the Aisha Ibrahim Babangida Foundation and BrandXchange, according to a statement signed by Ondaje Ijagwu, the commission's Director of Corporate Affairs.

At a short ceremony at the FCCPC's Abuja headquarters, NaijaTimes handed its Institutional Integrity and Public Service Award to Tunji Bello, the commission's Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

The paper's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Ehi Braimah, said the award recognised the commission's work in protecting consumers, keeping markets competitive and pushing businesses to behave responsibly across Nigeria's economy. He was accompanied by James Akpandem, chairman of the NaijaTimes editorial board, and editor Toby Prince. NaijaTimes is published by the NaijaTimes Journalism Foundation.

Other honours for the commission

Daily Independent also announced it had nominated the FCCPC as its Regulator of the Year 2026, praising what it called the commission's persistence in carrying out its mandate.

Earlier in the week, the Women Enterprise Alliance, which operates under the Aisha Babangida Foundation, shortlisted the commission for its Regulatory Body of the Year Award. The group said the honour celebrates not just the commission's regulatory role but the wider effect of good regulation in building business confidence, drawing more people into markets and supporting lasting economic growth.

BrandXchange, for its part, named the FCCPC its Citizen-centric MDA of the Year (Federal) for 2026, citing what it described as exemplary service, notable achievements and a strong commitment to excellence.

Bello, receiving the NaijaTimes award, said the recognition would push the commission to work harder. He said the team was encouraged that its efforts were being noticed in different quarters, but that what mattered most was the difference made in consumers' lives and in how honestly the market operates.

"These recognitions challenge us to do more," he said, adding that the commission would stay focused on building markets where businesses compete fairly and consumers are treated justly.

He was supported at the event by Louis Odion, Executive Commissioner of Operations; Hajia Ummusalma Isiaku Rabiu, Executive Commissioner of Corporate Services; and all the commission's directors.

The FCCPC is the federal body that enforces competition and consumer protection rules. For ordinary Nigerians, its work covers everything from the quality of goods on shop shelves to how businesses treat buyers when things go wrong, which is why the awards are being watched beyond the commission's Abuja office.

What happens next is unclear from the statements: the sources do not say when the Daily Independent, Babangida foundation or BrandXchange awards will be presented.
